Giulio Andreotti was Prime Minister in the years of national solidarity, economic crisis and terrorism, culminating in the kidnapping and murder of Aldo Moro. In the following decade his political activity took on a decisive international connotation, with the appointment as President of the Foreign Affairs Committee of the Chamber and then, with the first Craxi government, as Foreign Minister.

These unpublished diaries of his - which began on August 6, 1979 and ended on July 22, 1989, when he assumed the leadership of his sixth government - thus became the story from the inside not only of our country at a crucial time, but also of the United States from Carter to Reagan, of the USSR from Brezhnev to Gorbachev, of the Iranian revolution, of the eternal conflict in the Middle East, of the tormented construction of European unity.

At the same time, they tell the daily life of the man who dominated Italian political life for over half a century. "We believe" write the curators Serena and Stefano Andreotti "that reading can help to better understand the figure of our father, purifying it from some commonplaces".

Thanks to the patient work of Giulio Andreotti sons, Stefano and Serena - who also drew on other autograph documents - the personalities and events of a decade come to life through personal notations, sharp judgments, memorable jokes of spirit. As Andrea Riccardi notes in his introduction, these diaries reveal the "secret" of Andreotti's political action: "an immense weave of relationships in Italian politics, in the Church and on the international scenario... For this reason the diary is an original contribution to history and an exciting text that closely shows the life and commitment of a protagonist of those years".
