Help victims of hurricane Harvey

The Order Sons and Daughters of Italy in America (OSDIA), the largest and longest-established organization representing men and women of Italian heritage in the United States, is encouraging its members and supporters to help the hurricane relief effort by contributing to local organizations helping victims in the areas devastated by the storm.

Hurricane Harvey hit Houston, leaving hundred of thousands of people in the area displaced and in need of both immediate and long-term assistance. While the worst of the storm surge had ended by midday Saturday, CNN meteorologist Michael Guy noted that, “sea water pushed onto the shore…won't recede quickly,” meaning "this is going to be a long, ongoing flood event." As of press time, over 2,000 people have been rescued in the area.

This critical situation requires immediate attention; local groups and organizations already located in the affected areas are perhaps best prepared to handle those needs. In response, the Sons and Daughters of Italy encourages volunteerism and/or donations to any group assisting on the ground in the region.

OSDIA National President Vera Girolami urged members to help with relief efforts: “As the very generous Order Sons and Daughters of Italy in America have always done in the past to help those in need, please donate to the Hurricane Harvey Relief Fund.”
